If you’re scanning the full-size pickup market and the words “Hemi V8” still make you sit up, then the 2026 Ram 1500 Tradesman with the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 (augmented by eTorque) may be the American-truck flag you want to wave. I drove it as an everyday, doing truck stuff, and off-road. The short version? Not much has changed.
The big headline is that the HEMI V8 is back. After a year without the V8 option, Ram has reinstated the 5.7-litre HEMI in the 2026 Ram 1500 lineup for all but the top end Tungsten and RHO models. This wasn’t much of a stretch, given that this generation of the Ram housed this same powertrain from the get-go. The Hemi outputs 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. It also features the eTorque mild-hybrid system, which is a belt-driven motor-generator, 48-volt battery pack, with brake regen, cylinder deactivation, etc. For the Tradesman trim, this means you’re getting a no-frills work truck orientation but now with a V8 soundtrack and the associated heritage. The Warlock I drove adds a few comfort amenities and 4×4.
With that HEMI under the hood, you’re handed something that feels mechanically visceral and familiar. The V8 note, the broad band of torque, the immediate throttle feel (helped by the eTorque assist).. there’s real emotional satisfaction here. That said, in pure spec vs. the new twin-turbo “Hurricane” six in the 1500, the HEMI is no longer the top performer: it produces less peak torque and horsepower than the new turbo option.
But, in practice, if you pick the Hemi, you’ll have more than enough grunt for typical hauling and towing. It’s not chasing the performance crown, it’s aimed at work. The refinement is very good for a V8 truck, partly due to the eTorque smoothing transitions. Ride and comfort remain strong suits of the Ram 1500 family, even in the lower-tier work truck configuration.
In a Tradesman guise, the 1500 is geared toward utility: durable materials, simpler cabin, fewer frills. Which means fewer distractors and lower cost of ownership if you’re going to use it hard.
If you’re someone who needs a capable half-ton pickup for work, hauls tools or gear, perhaps tows on occasion, and you appreciate the character of a V8, then the return of the Hemi is for you.
The 2026 Ram 1500 Tradesman with the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 is less about radical reinvention and more about playing to its strengths. It brings back muscle, sound and emotion in a package that stays practical and work-friendly. It doesn’t become the fastest or most efficient truck in its class, but it doesn’t aim to. Instead, it gives you the truck you know, but tuned for today.
